Field Notes is not a jacket in the traditional sense, but a meditation on what clothing can hold, both physically and metaphorically. Designed and sewn by Oregon coast–based upcycling artist Danielle La’Rae, the piece transforms reclaimed 20oz canvas into a garment covered with thirty-two sculptural pockets.

The canvas itself carries a history. Once used as protective sheeting inside a plexiglass factory, the heavy 20oz fabric has been re-contextualized from industrial barrier to wearable canvas. In its new life, the material no longer shields machinery, but instead becomes a carrier for wildflowers, notes, and fragments of the field. A shift from separating production to gathering memory.
At first glance, the pockets look purely utilitarian, a nod to field jackets or workwear. But their shape is intentional: each is patterned after the paper sleeves or cones used to carry fresh bouquets. In doing so, Field Notes reimagines pockets not as functional storage but as vessels for memory - containers for wildflowers, scraps, notes, and fragments of a life in motion. They are both practical and poetic, suggesting that clothing can be a companion in gathering experiences as much as it is a shield against the elements.
The jacket pushes against the boundary of wearability. It is undeniably heavy, cumbersome, and excessive, yet in that excess lies its message. By multiplying a single form across the body, Field Notes makes visible the relationship between repetition, silhouette, and storytelling in fashion design. The familiar act of “adding a pocket” is exaggerated into an almost sculptural gesture, turning the jacket into a wearable field guide.
Field Notes is part of an ongoing body of work exploring what happens when clothing steps outside of utility. Proving that fashion can be both responsible and experimental.
In the end, Field Notes suggests that a jacket can be more than something you put on; it can be a vessel for collecting the world around you. It’s not about having thirty-two places to store your keys or phone…it’s about having thirty-two opportunities to carry fragments of the field, stitched into form.

There’s something magical about stepping away from daily routines, surrounding yourself with beautiful places, and letting creativity take the lead. The first stop was Camp Randonnèe - a rustic, woodsy escape that felt like the coziest of creative cocoons. From there, I shifted gears and headed to Earthlight Villas, a modern retreat perched high above the valley with sweeping views that made me want to stay forever. Floor-to-ceiling windows filled each space with light, creating the perfect setting for slowing down and stitching in peace.
Thrifting Adventures: Four Shops, Endless Inspiration
What’s a Sewcation without a good thrift hunt? I explored four unique shops, each filled with unexpected gems.
One shop carried racks of vintage blankets with the kind of worn-in wool that sparks endless ideas.
Another was overflowing with quirky prints, retro textures, and fabrics begging for a second life.
Every stop reinforced the magic of thrifting: you never know what you’ll find, but you always leave with your imagination buzzing.

The Coast Coat PDF Sewing Pattern
Materials You'll Need:
Blanket: Choose a blanket with a material and pattern you adore. Wool, fleece, or flannel blankets work particularly well for this project.
Scissors: Sharp fabric scissors are essential for precise cutting.
Sewing Machine: While it's possible to sew by hand, a machine will make the process quicker and more efficient.
Thread: Ensure the color complements or matches your blanket.
Measuring Tape: To ensure accurate sizing.
Pins or Clips: These will help hold the fabric in place while sewing.
Bias Tape - 9+ yards of 1/2" double fold Bias Tape.
Step 1: Design and Plan
Before diving into the project, consider the design you want for your jacket. Think about the length, pocket design, and any additional features you'd like to incorporate. The pattern includes quite a few options!
Step 2: Measure and Cut
Measure a puffy jacket you already like wear by laying it flat on the foor. Measure it flat from the bottom of one armpit to the other. Use these measurements and use the Chest Measurement in the chart to find what size works best for you! This pattern is oversized, so when in doubt size down.
Step 3: Follow The Pattern

Step 5: Add Details
At this point, you can get creative. Add pockets, a collar, or any other embellishments you envision for your jacket. Remember to securely sew these in place.
Step 6: Finish the Edges
Neaten the edges of your jacket by folding them over and sewing them down. This not only gives a polished look but also prevents frayin
Step 7: Optional Closures
If you'd like your jacket to have closures, like buttons or a zipper, now is the time to attach them.
Step 8: Final Touches
Give your jacket a once-over to ensure all seams are secure and any loose threads are trimmed. If you like, you can also add any final embellishments or details.
